Exact model first
Use the exact laptop model and, when available, the manufacturer part identifier. Similar chassis generations can use different ribbon connectors or mounting systems.
Layout, backlight and frame
Check language, Enter-key shape, numeric keypad, backlight support, color and whether the replacement is keyboard-only or an entire top-case assembly.
Repairability matters
Review a service manual before ordering. Some keyboards are simple screw-and-ribbon replacements while others are integrated into the palm rest.
