NVMe and SATA: similar shape, different path

Last updated September 30, 2026

Two M.2 drives can look nearly identical and still be incompatible.

M.2 is not the protocol

M.2 describes the module and connector family. Storage traffic may use SATA or PCI Express/NVMe depending on how the slot is wired.

Visual clues are not enough

Connector keying helps, but the motherboard or laptop specification is the stronger source. Some slots support only one protocol while others support both.

Performance comes after support

An NVMe drive may be faster, but that is irrelevant if the system supports only SATA in that slot.
